PECB also announced in August 2026 that its ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Auditor personnel certification scheme is independently accredited by UKAS under ISO/IEC 17024:2012.

The main prerequisite for participating in the ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Auditor training course is a fundamental understanding of ISO/IEC 42001 and AI principles and concepts.

Yes, but the Lead Auditor credential has its own certification requirements. Passing the Lead Auditor exam alone does not automatically grant the PECB Certified ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Auditor credential.

For the ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Auditor credential, PECB currently requires:

  • Five years of professional experience
  • Two years of experience in AI
  • 300 hours of audit activities
  • Successful completion of the PECB ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Auditor exam or an accepted equivalent
  • Signing the PECB Code of Ethics

PECB also has a formal process for upgrading credentials when the applicable requirements are fulfilled.
